The United States decides to withdraw its Embassy staff in Haiti due to the deteriorating security situation

The United States of America decided to withdraw all its Embassy staff and their families from Haiti, with the exception of emergency staff, due to what it described as the deteriorating security situation there.

In a statement, the US State Department warned US citizens against traveling to Haiti due to the deteriorating security situation there, “widespread kidnappings, crime and civil unrest, and poor healthcare infrastructure.”

The department said US citizens in Haiti should leave as soon as possible.

Last October, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres conveyed to the Security Council the Haitian government’s demand for an international intervention force to support the police in confronting gang violence that terrorizes the population. As I mentioned to the United Nations, in a report this month, that violence in Haiti “continued to escalation and spread,” and that homicides increased, between January and last June, by 67.5 percent compared to the second half of 2022, at a time when the police were unable to act.
