UN Secretary-General Condemns Attack on Iranian Consulate in Damascus

Washington, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on Iran’s diplomatic buildings in Damascus on April 1. He stressed the need to respect the principle of inviolability of diplomatic and consular buildings and their employees per international law.

The spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General said in a statement that Guterres reminds all parties of their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law. He reiterated his call on all concerned to avoid attacks that may harm civilians and civilian infrastructure.

The UN Secretary-General called on all parties concerned to exercise the utmost restraint and avoid further escalation. He warned that any miscalculation could lead to a broader conflict in an already turbulent region, which would have devastating consequences for civilians who have witnessed unprecedented suffering in Syria, Lebanon, the occupied Palestinian territory, and the rest of the Middle East region.
