US imposes new sanctions over Russian gas pipeline (Nord Stream2)

WASHINGTON, The US imposed new sanctions Friday on a Russian ship and two persons involved in constructing the (Nord Stream 2) gas pipeline from Russia to Europe.

In a statement, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that his department has submitted a report to Congress lists one Russian vessel and two Russian persons involved in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline construction.

The state department has now sanctioned seven persons and identified 16 of their vessels as blocked property, the statement added.

Blinken stressed that even as the US administration continues to oppose the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, via sanctions, it would continue to work with Germany and other allies and partners to reduce the risks posed by the pipeline to Ukraine and frontline NATO and EU countries and to push back against harmful Russian activities, including in the energy sphere.

US President Joe biden issued an executive order allowing for sanctions to be imposed with respect to certain Russian energy export pipelines.

The construction of a Nord Stream 2 pipeline or North Stream 2 will ensure the flow of 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Russian shores through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
