Veteran Kuwaiti military chief named UN coordinator for Black Sea grain initiative

– United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has appointed the Kuwaiti veteran Kuwaiti officer-turned-diplomat Abdullah Abdulsamad Dashti as the UN coordinator for the “Black Sea initiative for grain transfer.” In a statement late on Wednesday, the UN chief voiced satisfaction for Dashti’s holding of the key post to secure grain shipments from Ukraine to various corners of the world.

Dashti has succeeded Amir Abdullah of Sudan who had served in the post since August 2022.

Dashti, in 2021, retired from the Kuwaiti Armed Forces where he had served as a navy admiral for 40 years. During the 2019-2020 period, he had served as the State of Kuwait’s Military Attache in Belgium and the representative of the Kuwaiti mission with the NATO. Moreover, he had been commander of Mubarak Al-Abdullah Academy for Command and Joint Staff between 2015 and 2019.

Dashti’s lengthy record of services included his job as a main adviser at the academy (2011-2015). He had been also named as commander of the task fore 152 for joint ships between 2012 and 2013. He also held several other sensitive posts.

The cereals’ initiative had been launched in coordination among Ukraine, Turkey and the UN in July, setting the stage for resuming exportation of Ukrainian grain, food products and fertilizers via safe naval passageways to multi destinations across the globe.
