EP rejects two Commissioners-designate

BRUSSELS, European Parliament President David Sassoli Monday sent two letters to the President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to inform her that the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee has voted to reject two Commissioners-designate.

The two, Laszlo Trocsanyi from Hungary and Rovana Plumb from Romania, were rejected on the grounds of conflicts of interest found when their declarations of financial interests were examined, he noted.

Until President-elect von der Leyen has communicated to the Parliament what further steps she intends to take, the hearings for the Romanian and Hungarian Commissioners-designate will be suspended, said Sassoli in his letter.

Members of 18 committees in the European Parliament began this afternoon grilling the nominees for the European Commission.

The entire grilling process will take six days, with each committee asking at least 25 questions to the Commissioners-designate.

The new European Commission is expected to take office on 1 November.
