Jordan slams Israel’s new settlements plans

AMMAN, Jordan on Monday deplored the Israeli plans to construct new settlements in Jabal Mukaber, Qalandiya and the Old City of Hebron, Khalil City.

A Foreign Ministry’s statement quoted Minister Ayman Al-Safadi as saying that there is no legitimacy for the Israeli settlements in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law.

The statement described the Israeli move as a violation of the international law and an illegitimate measure undermining the efforts of achieving peace.

Al-Safadi stressed the necessity for international community to shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities to stop the Israeli settlements and oblige Israeli to implement the UN Security Council resolution 2,334, according to the statement. He cautioned that Israel’s continued construction and expansion of settlements undermine the two-state solution, the only way to resolve the conflict.

The resolution 2,334, which was adopted by the UNSC in 2016, calls for putting an end to the Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Meanwhile, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh stressed, during today’s session, that the government would do its best to top halt the Israeli settlements.
