CAIRO, Former KuwaitI Information Minister Sameh Al-Nesif Sunday stressed the significant role of media in the promotion of sustainable development in the Arab world.
Al-Nesif made the remark during a debate held on the sidelines of the third version of the Arab Sustainable Development Week, held under the rubric: Integrated Partnership for a Sustainable Future”.
“Public and private media has a crucial role to play in supporting or even undermining sustainable development processes,” he said.
He added that it is the prime duty of media to involve all segments of the society in sustainable development and to fight any counter-strategies.
He also underscored the important part of media in stemming the tide of inherited concepts of enmity and skepticism in terms of national development blueprints and projects.
The former information minister further emphasized that key obstacles impeding sustainable development, primarily overpopulation, should be wiped out.
He concluded by urging all media outlets to play their due role in fanning out the spirits of tolerance, amity and optimism.
Attracting over 1,500 senior officials and decision-makers, the Arab Sustainable Development Week is mainly intended to look into how to put sustainable development goals in place.
