US Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison affirmed Sunday that NATO is “making progress” to increase defense spending at the “insistence” of President Donald Trump.
Hutchison told Fox New network, “NATO really is making progress and they are doing it really at President Trump’s insistence and I think that it’s very clear, and he’s been very direct about the Europeans needing to do more for their own security.” She added every ally is now increasing defense spending. “We’ve had the largest increase in defense spending since the Cold War. And in the year and a half since President Trump has been in office, it has doubled since 2014.” Asked if it is still the position of the US that NATO allies have reason to be concerned about threats from Russia, she said “we are hardening our defenses as a deterrence against the invasion of any outside influence.” It is most certainly Russia, which has had much-maligned influence that has been an attempt to destabilize NATO and “ou allies.” She stressed “I know that all of us in the United States is right there too want to assure that we have the mutual defense against any kind of malign influence that Russia might attempt.” Hutchison said NATO prioritized counterterrorism at the best of Trump.
On Thursday, a senior Trump administration official told reporters that the major overall theme of NATO’s summit in Brussels will be NATO’s “strength and unity,” and the major areas of deterrence are “the malign activities of Russia.
