Pompeo subpoenaed amid impeachment probe into Trump

WASHINGTON, Three committees of the US House of Representatives subpoenaed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday for documents related to the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The subpoena was issued by heads of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Eliot Engel, Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff, and Oversight and Reform Committee Elijah Cummings.

In a joint letter to Pompeo, the Democratic Reps wrote, “The extent to which President Trump jeopardized national security by pressing Ukraine to interfere with our 2020 election and by withholding security assistance provided by Congress to help Ukraine counter Russian aggression. “Pursuant to the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry, we are hereby transmitting a subpoena that compels you to produce the documents,” according to the letter.

“Your failure or refusal to comply with the subpoena shall constitute evidence of obstruction of the House’s impeachment inquiry,” the heads of the three committees added.

They requested that the Secretary of State should produce by October 4 documents relating to possible involvement of his Department in Trump’s efforts to mar the image of Joe Biden – the former vice president and the candidate of the Democratic Party, ahead of the 2020 presidential elections.

Trump has allegedly applied pressures on the Ukrainian government to investigate Hunter Biden – the son of Joe Biden, or face the threat of withholding the nearly USD 400 million in US military assistance. Yesterday, Pompeo told reporters in New York, “Each of the actions that were undertaken by State Department officials was entirely appropriate and consistent with the objective that we’ve had certainly since this new government has come into office.” On Tuesday, the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the start of the impeachment inquiry.
