A delegation of Syrian civil society representatives met Thursday with EU member states representatives and European External Action Service officials in preparation for the Syrian conference later this year.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the increasing levels of violence in Syria’s de-escalation zones and the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation, the delegation said a press statement.
It urged the EU to assume a leadership role in creating the political pressure necessary to revive the Geneva-led political process and use the Syria Brussels Conference as an opportunity to amplify support to civil society.
“The intensification of attacks in the so-called de-escalation zones not only highlights the absolute fallacy of Russia-led attempts to achieve peace in Syria, but also directly undermines the credibility of the political process as a whole,” said the delegation’s executive director Mutasem Syoufi.
