US halts Afghanistan finical assistance due to corruption – Pompeo

WASHINGTON, The US is returning approximately USD 100 million — intended for a large energy infrastructure project in Afghanistan – to the US Treasury on suspicion of corruption in the latter country, said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Thursday.

In a statement, Pompeo added “We will be withholding USD 60 million in planned assistance due to the government’s failure to meet benchmarks for transparency and accountability in public financial management.” Afghan government is expected to demonstrate a clear commitment to fight corruption, to serve the Afghan people, and to maintain their trust. Afghan leaders who fail to meet this standard should be held accountable, he pointed out.
