Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Saturday his regular forces were on the verge of making “victory” in the ongoing operation for seizing the Syrian northwestern town of Afrin.
Addressing a rally for his followers in central town of Afyonkarahisar, the president said the Turkish troops have taken control of 300 square kilometers in the ongoing advance toward Afrin.
The operation aims at paving the way for three million Syrian refugees hosted by Turkey to return home, he said, reiterating that Ankara has no expansionist ambitions in Syria.
Meanwhile, the Turkish Army announced that the forces have demolished 674 positions manned by separatist Kurdish fighters and the so-called Islamic State in the Afrin region since launch of the operation “the olive branch” on January 20.
