Austria proposes to host US-Russian summit

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurtz has proposed a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Vienna aimed at resolving tensions between them over Syria, Ukraine and other issues.

Deputy Austrian Chancellor and leader of the right-wing Liberal Party, Christian Strache, told reporters that there was deliberations on the hosting of the summit in July.

According to Austrian media, Kurtz proposed to President Putin during his visit to Austria last week to hold a summit with Trump in Vienna this summer and Putin agreed in principle as a preferred neutral venue.

The Austrian Chancellor has sought in recent months to harness all means available to enhance his popularity in Austria and abroad and took in this regard unprecedented decisions, most notably the closure of several mosques.
