BRUSSELS, European Parliament (EP) President David Sassoli Thursday wrote a letter to the European Council President, Donald Tusk, to recommend he accepts the request for a further extension of Brexit to January 31, 2020.
This followed a meeting between Sassoli and the leaders of political groups at EP today.
“This extension will allow the United Kingdom to clarify its position and the European Parliament to properly exercise its role,” underlined Sassoli.
This extension period could end earlier should ratification and consent procedure have been completed in both the United Kingdom and the European Parliament, he noted.
Sassoli stressed that the EP’s consent procedure would begin only after the ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement by the United Kingdom.
