EU agrees to “principle” of Brexit extension

BRUSSELS, European Union(EU) ambassadors Friday agreed to the principle of a Brexit extension as requested by the UK, an EU spokesperson said.

“The EU ambassadors just finished the meeting in attendance of EU chief negotiator on Brexit Michel Barnier,” chief European Commission spokesperson Mina Andreeva told a news conference.

“The EU 27 have agreed to the principle of an extension and work will now continue in the coming days. The intention is to take this decision in a written procedure,” she noted.

Written procedure means that the EU leaders will not personally meet in a summit to take a decision.

“We are following all the events in London and in coming days very closely,” she added.
