Hong Kong chief warns riots may annihilate country

BEIJING, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Monday warned that the ongoing waves of protests and violence would ultimately annihilate the country.

Speaking at a news conference, Lam said violence is not the solution; it will only lead to more violence.

She confirmed that in the latest bout of violence, one protestor was shot and wounded and another was set alight by demonstrators.

Meanwhile, security sources said one demonstrator was wounded with gunfire in clashes between activities and police officers.

The Chinese “CGTN” news network said security personnel were compelled to disperse protestors by force after spread of riots.

Police on Sunday said 88 persons had been arrested on sabotage charges.

Hong Kong has been witnessing widespread demonstrations against a bill stipulating handover of criminals to regional power, China.
