KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohammad on Friday said he would not expel Muslim Uyghurs to China if Beijing requests their deportation.
Addressing parliament, the prime minister assured the lawmakers that he would not respond to China in case the latter requested that members of the Chinese Muslim minority be deported.
He has affirmed that the Uyghurs have legitimate rights and they should protected in countries where they settle, however he gestured to Beijing that he would not meddle in its internal affairs.
In earlier remarks, Mahathir has affirmed that he will not provoke “powerful China” over the Muslim minority issue.
China is also a significant trade partner for Malaysia.
