US Defense Secretary James Mattis spoke with South Korean Minister of National Defense Song Young-moo Saturday on a range of bilateral matters, the Pentagon announced late Friday.
Mattis and Song “recognized the dangers of North Korea’s reckless and unlawful behavior, which goes against the strong consensus of the international community, as reflected in multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions,” the announcement said.
The two affirmed the “strength” of the US-South Korean alliance. Secretary Mattis reaffirmed the US commitment to defend South Korea using the full spectrum of US capabilities, the statement pointed out.
Mattis and Song discussed “the importance of strong international support for diplomatic actions to resolve the North Korean threat and noted the upcoming Vancouver Ministerial Meeting of Sending States on January 15-16,” it concluded
