NATO welcomes increase in US military presence in Poland

BRUSSELS, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg Wednesday welcomed today’s announcement that the United States will increase its military presence in Poland.

“This shows the strong commitment of the United States to European security and the strength of the transatlantic bond. NATO already has a strong presence in Poland, including a multinational battle group led by the US to deter any possible aggression,” he said in a statement tonight.

The announcement was made in Washington after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and President Andrzej Duda in Washington.

Stoltenberg noted that NATO also recently agreed to invest USD 269 million to support the pre-positioning of US forces in Poland.

Today’s announcement is part of NATO’s measured, defensive and proportionate efforts to strengthen our deterrence and defence, said the NATO chief.

“It is fully in line with NATO’s international commitments. When the world changes, we have to adapt to make sure that we can continue to protect all allies” he added.
