Russian FM raps anew US decision on Jewish settlements

MOSCOW, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Thursday echoed broadside against the recent US decision to legitimize Israeli settlements as a breach of international resolutions.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Malaysian counterpart Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah, Lavrov said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s announcement on Israeli settlement activities in Palestinian territories contravenes relevant UN Security Council resolutions and deepens the existing conflict.

The US on Monday reversed course on its position regarding Israeli settlements built in the occupied West Bank, breaking with over four decades of precedent in saying that they will no longer be viewed as illegal “per se”.

The Russian Foreign Ministry slammed on Tuesday Washington’s decision to legitimize the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

It said the US move undermines international basis of the Palestinian-Israeli settlement and will escalate the situation in the Middle East.

International law views both the West Bank and East Jerusalem as occupied territories and considers all Jewish settlement-building activity there illegal.
