UK “indispensable” ally to US – Amb. Johnson

US Ambassador to the UK Robert Wood Johnson stressed the importance of President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK next week, saying London is an indispensable ally to Washington.

Johnson told reporters via teleconference that the security and prosperity of American and British people are completely intertwined, and on a military level, “we’re more aligned with the UK than almost any other nation in the world, bar none.

“We’re together in the fight against terrorism: Syria, Afghanistan – It’s the same story with intelligence. We share information together that we don’t necessarily share with everybody else,” he added.

Trump’s mission is really simply to strengthen the special relationship through shared security and prosperity. It’s going to be a very special visit,” Johnson remarked.

He added that Trump “would love to do a bilateral trade deal. And he’s really ready to step up on that the minute we get the go-ahead to do it. He will get it done fast because I know it’s a major priority for him.” Johnson reiterated that Trump “is going to strengthen and nurture the already strong relationship we have on business and security.” Trump will be holding bilateral talks on a “range of very important topics,” with British Prime Minister Theresa May at Chequers, outside London, before Trump and First Lady Melania Trump travel to Windsor Castle to meet Queen Elizabeth.
