US sanctions Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif

WASHINGTON, The US on Wednesday imposed sanctions on Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, saying that the move was aimed at sending a “clear message” to the Iranian regime.

The move is meant to target officials associated with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who himself was at the receiving end of sanctions in late June, according to the Treasury Department.

“Javad Zarif implements the reckless agenda of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and is the regime’s primary spokesperson around the world,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

“The United States is sending a clear message to the Iranian regime that its recent behavior is completely unacceptable,” he added.

Commenting on the decision, Zarif said on twitter that the sanctions would have “no effect” on him or his family, as he has “no property or interests” overseas.
